The sensation that settled over him was like having a million needles stuck into his flesh, then twisted for the fun of it. Kadin had two sisters and a brother in the firefighting service and yes, there had been times he’d held his breath in fear. Yet, those moments were nothing compared to this.

Pulling in front of the house, he did a quick assessment as he bailed out of the engine. It was a two-story home and light smoke showed from the attic vents. Crossing the yard, he started his 360. On the bravo side, there was a basement window-well which appeared to have a shade but no visible smoke or fire, so he continued his walk, noting nothing seemed to point to where this fire was. On the delta side, there was another window-well, this one had no shade, but the glass was intact and again, nothing led him to believe the fire was in the basement. Still, he didn’t have enough information and for some reason, his dragon was being a dick and refused to allow Kadin his magic. Clicking his radio as he made his way back to the engine.

“Dispatch from engine ten command, three-sixty is complete. I have light smoke showing from the interior windows. We’ll stay in the offensive strategy from the alpha side.”

“Engine ten command.”

“Ten go.”

“Basement status.”

Kadin looked back at the house before clicking his mic. “I’m still on the exterior getting ready. Firefighter Williams just came out and said there is a possible basement fire.”

With that in mind, he handed Avery an ax. “You sound the floor.”

“Copy that.” She hoisted the ax onto her shoulder and headed for the front door.

Since they had no idea of the status of the homeowners, they were going to have to search the entire structure. Kadin touched the front door, which was warm but not hot. He checked the handle and found it locked so Smith moved in with his halligan bar and pried the door open. Once popped, a whoosh of light gray smoke came at them, but they saw no flames.

“I’m going in.” Avery stepped in and began tapping her ax on the floor to check for soft spots.

Kadin moved behind her, his vision good for about ten feet in front, when he spotted something dark. Moving toward it, he discovered it was only a bookcase.

“We’re at the stairwell to the basement. There is moderate heat, but we’re going to be making entry down to the basement,” Smith reported.

“Copy, making entry into the basement.”

Kadin continued to move, one eye on Avery as she sounded the floor and they searched for an entry to the second story where the bedrooms were located.

“Over here. I think the stairs are––”

Kadin heard the crack right before Avery’s words cut off and she dropped from sight. It happened so fast it left him with nothing more than his training. “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Firefighter through the floor. We are about midway into the living room.”

“Copy, Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Priority traffic, engine ten firefighter through the floor midway into the living room.
